GEPHARDT ELECTED HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER.(Main)

Rep. Richard Gephardt today was elected House majority leader as Democrats sought to recover from the ethics turmoil that brought down two of their top three officials.

Gephardt defeated Rep. Ed Jenkins of Georgia by a vote of 181-76.

Three Democrats were vying for the No. 3 job in the party hierarchy.

Gephardt failed last year in a bid for the party's presidential nomination.
